Washington mall shooting: Manhunt underway after gunman kills 5
[Bild: 160924061803-washington-mall-shooting-sc...ge-169.jpg]

A man carrying a rifle entered a Macy's store at a mall in Washington state, shot dead four women and a man, and vanished into the night, police said.
Authorities believe only one person fired the shots Friday night at Cascade Mall in Burlington, about an hour north of Seattle.
A search is underway for an armed man who headed toward Interstate 5 after the attack, said Sgt. Mark Francis, a spokesman for the Washington State Patrol.
Francis released a blurry surveillance photo of a man described as the suspect. His motive or relationship to the victims, if any, are unclear, he said.
The names of the victims were not immediately released.

Later in the day, police gave details on the suspect. Arcan Cetin, a 20-year-old Turkish national and legal permanent resident in the US, was arrested for assault last year in Island County, according to KOMO News. The suspect was formally charged and will be booked into the Skagit County Jail, police officials added.

Cetin was arrested following intense manhunt in the area. Lt. Mike Hawley of the Island County Sheriff’s Office, who detained Cetin, told KOMO News that he behaved “almost like a zombie.”
“I said, ‘You’re under arrest’ and he didn’t say much – well, he didn’t say anything at all,” Hawley said.

"told KOMO News that he behaved “almost like a zombie.”

Arcan Cetin: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know
The man accused of killing five people inside a Washington state shopping mall has been named as Arcan Cetin. Around 7 p.m. September 23, a gunman opened fire inside a Macy’s store at the Cascade Mall in Burlington, Washington. Cetin is 20 years old. He’s a native of Turkey but is now a legal resident of the United States.
The gunman fled the scene before police arrived and remained at large for 24 hours after the shooting.
The fatal victims have been described as four females — ranking in ages from 16 to 95 — and one male.
Cetin was arrested without incident nearly 24 hours after the shooting in Oak Harbor, Washington, about 30 miles from Burlington.
Here’s what we know so far:
1. Cetin Was ‘Zombie Like’ When He Was Arrested
Lt. Chris Cammock of the Oak Harbor Police Department said at a press conference announcing Cetin’s arrest that the suspect was “kind of zombie-like” when he was taken into custody. He didn’t attempt to run from arresting officers. Officials had received numerous tips about the suspect. Lt. Michael Hawley of the Island County Sheriff’s Office added that shortly after he received a report that Cetin was close, Hawley found the suspect walking on the street.
KIRO’s Gary Horcher reported during the search that someone identifying himself as the shooter has contacted police. The shooting began just after 7 p.m. inside one of the Macy’s stores in the mall, reports KOMO. A witness to the attack, Tari Caswell, told the Skagit Valley Herald about her experience during the incident saying, “I just stayed quiet in the dressing room because it just didn’t feel right. And it got very quiet. And then I heard a lady yelling for help, and a man came and got me and another lady, and we ran out of the store.”
The female victims were shot dead at Macy’s make-up desk. Authorities say that the suspect checked out the area before going back out to get a gun. KING 5’s Chris Ingalls reports that the weapon is thought to have been a .22 caliber hunting rifle. KING 5 reports that cops believe Cetin stole the guns he used from his father. That gun was recovered at the scene. Due to a prior arrest, Cetin had been prohibted from owning guns.

'Creepy' mall shooting suspect had multiple arrests
OAK HARBOR, WA --
The 20-year-old man suspected of killing five people with a rifle at a Macy's makeup counter was described by a neighbor as so "creepy, rude and obnoxious" that she kept a Taser by her front door. He also had a string of run-ins with the law in recent years, including charges he assaulted his stepfather.

VIDEO: Suspect in Washington mall shooting was 'zombie-like' when arrested

As investigators tried to piece together information on Arcan Cetin, who was arrested Saturday evening after a nearly 24-hour manhunt, a picture emerged of a troubled young man. Court records show more than a half-dozen criminal cases in Island County alone since 2013.

Authorities said the gunman in the attack at the Cascade Mall in Burlington opened fire in the department store's cosmetics department Friday night, killing a man and four females ranging from a teenager to a senior citizen. The killer then fled.

Original Report: Death toll in Seattle-area mall shooting rises to 5

Cetin said nothing and appeared "zombie-like" when he was taken into custody on a sidewalk outside his apartment complex some 30 miles away in Oak Harbor by a sheriff's officer who recognized him as the suspect in the rampage, authorities said.

Cetin immigrated to the U.S. from Turkey and is a legal permanent resident, officials said. He is expected to make an initial court appearance Monday.

As the surrounding area absorbed news of the arrest, critical questions remained, including the gunman's motive. The FBI said early Saturday that there was no indication the shooting was terrorism, but local authorities said later in the day that they were ruling nothing out.

On Sept. 17, a 20-year-old man stabbed 10 people at a Minnesota mall before being shot to death by an off-duty police officer. Authorities said they are investigating the attack by Dahir Ahmed Adan as a possible act of terrorism.

On Sunday, investigators searched Cetin's vehicle and the apartment complex and were seen carrying boxes from a rear, upstairs unit. The four-unit building was surrounded with yellow police tape. Detectives would not say what they found.

Amber Cathey, 21, lived in an apartment next to Cetin for the past three months and said she was so frightened by him that she complained to apartment management and kept a stun gun handy. Cathey said she blocked him on Snapchat after he sent her a photo of his crotch.

"He was really creepy, rude and obnoxious," Cathey said. She said she would try to avoid him by walking the long way around to her apartment if she saw his car in the parking lot. The two were in high school together as well, and Cathey said he acted the same way then.

The Seattle Times reported that court records show Cetin faced three charges of assaulting his stepfather. The newspaper said Cetin also was arrested on drunken driving charges. It gave no details on when the arrests took place or how the cases may have been resolved.

In the assault case, Cetin was told by a judge last December that he was not to possess a gun, the newspaper reported. However, the stepfather urged the judge not to impose a no-contact order, saying his stepson was "going through a hard time."

Attempts to reach Cetin's family for comment by phone and social media weren't immediately successful. It wasn't clear if Cetin had a lawyer yet. A man who came to the door Sunday morning at an Oak Harbor address believed to be where Cetin's stepfather and mother live asked an Associated Press reporter to leave the property.

Police said that they interviewed the suspect's former girlfriend, who has worked a different Macy's. No other details were released, including her name.

Social media accounts apparently belonging to Cetin showed he had a fondness for the military and video games.

A Twitter account showed, among other things, selfies, photos of him in younger years and pictures of Turkish food. He once participated in paintball and said he "can't wait for Halo 5," the first-person shooter video game. He also tweeted: "Shout out to the ROTC peeps." A Facebook account showed he liked military-related sites.

Cetin also appeared to have blogs on the site Tumblr that had not been updated in many months. They included seemingly random posts about serial killer Ted Bundy, a collection of selfies, the top-secret Area 51 Cold War test site and photos of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and Islamic State group leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The two blogs linked back to each other and one of them linked to what appeared to be his Twitter page.

Oak Harbor is a city of 22,000 on Whidbey Island with many military families associated with the nearby Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.

The names of the dead from the mall shooting were not immediately released by police. But The Seattle Times identified one as 16-year-old Sarai Lara. Her mother said she survived cancer as a young girl and was a happy student.

Authorities in suburban Seattle identified another victim as Belinda Galde, 64, a probation officer with the Snohomish County District Court.

Before Wash. mall shooting, courts ordered mental health treatment for suspect
SEATTLE — Assaults on his parents and inappropriate sexual behavior at school led judges to order mental health treatment for the young man charged with killing five people at a Washington state department store, but weekly counseling sessions failed to help him.

Court records obtained by The Associated Press detail a series of criminal charges and attempts to rehabilitate 20-year-old Arcan Cetin, who was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety disorder and depression. They didn’t detail what caused the PTSD.
A court first ordered Cetin into treatment after he attacked his mother two years ago. He was following a program designed to erase that assault charge when he made unwelcome sexual advances toward two girls in his math class in 2015 and then punched his stepfather soon afterward, the documents say.

Jim Follman, an addiction counselor, wrote in January that there was “a strong likelihood of similar future violations” unless Cetin received treatment for his mental health and substance abuse disorders.

Cetin was involuntarily sent to a hospital for treatment two months earlier because professionals said he was likely to harm himself. He had attempted suicide and overdosed on his prescription drugs several times, records show.

But as recently as Sept. 6, he attended a counseling session and was found to be compliant with his court-ordered treatment.

Cetin’s parents, despite the attacks, helped him pay his rent and frequently visited - his stepfather had dinner with Cetin on Friday before police say he opened fire in the Macy’s cosmetics department at the Cascade Mall in Burlington, north of Seattle.

When officers arrested Cetin near his apartment Saturday night after a nearly 24-hour manhunt, they say he confessed to shooting the victims ranging from a 16-year-old girl to a woman in her 90s. He was charged with five counts of first-degree murder, but prosecutors said they still don’t know what motivated him.
The identities of four of the people killed in the shooting were released Tuesday. They were: Sarai Lara, 16; Shayla Kathleen Martin, 52; Belinda Sue Galde, 64; and Beatrice Dotson, 95. The cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds.
Stepfather David Marshall told reporters as he and Cetin’s mother, Hatice, left a court hearing Monday that they had been working with their son on his “mental health issues” and were devastated by the shooting. They have declined further interviews.
